Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the minimum and maximum enrollment age of a child at SIP Abacus?

At SIP Abacus, we accept enrollment of children between the ages of 5 and 12. We also do have children above the age of 12 who study with us but we accept them only on a case to case basis after an interview.

Q. Why does SIP Abacus work?

The unique training programme gives learners better visual memory and auditory skills. We train learners to combine visual, auditory and kinesthetic skills to solve problems faster. With these learning skills, an abacus student has the ability to perform better in any environment – not just in math.

Q. Do you promise a guarantee?

Yes, we promise your child will be 5x better or we’ll give you $2,000.

Q. How does the guarantee work?

We test your child when she or he attends the first class; we call this the pre-test. If your child doesn’t improve their maths ability by a minimum of 5 times after completing four levels (which takes about 18 months – or about 24 months for a child who joins at the junior level) and without taking a break longer than 2 months (when we retest your child), we will refund you $2,000.

Q. Does your program cost more than other tutoring programs?

SIP Abacus’ classes cost $28 each (Including a 20% discount for payment via direct debit). And our classes are 75-90 minutes long. Many other programs charge $60-65 per 60-minute lesson.

Q. How many students are in each class?

We cap our classes at 12 students so that each one gets special attention. The cap for online classes is 6 students to ensure that we can deliver the same quality.

Q. How long does each class last?

Each classroom session is 75 minutes while each online session lasts 90 minutes.

Q. How does the batch class system work?

Children start in a “batch” of six to twelve children. The group starts learning how to use the abacus and doing Maths on the abacus. They begin with easy sums, such as “What is 1+2?”. This batch then moves through the various levels over time. If a child was to take a month-long holiday, he or she will then be assigned to a new “batch,” which started a month later than this child’s original batch class to ensure he or she stays on the same level or the child can take extra makeup lessons to stay with the original batch. Learning is sequential, and unlike school, you don't directly go to a higher level like Foundation Level 2 – regardless of the child’s age.

Q. What is the progression of classes at SIP Abacus?

Generally, children aged 5 to 6 begin with Junior Level 1 while children aged 6 to 7 start with Junior Level 2. There are 4 Junior Levels which take about 4 months each. Children between 7 and 8 years may begin with either the Junior Abacus or Foundation Level 1, depending on their numerical proficiency and concentration skills. Children older than age 8 generally begin at Foundation Level 1, which takes 5-6 months to complete.

Then, the child progresses through Foundations 2, 3 and 4, and it takes 4-5 months to complete each level. Then, the child moves onto Advanced 1, 2, 3 and 4 (taking 4-5 months to complete each Advanced level), and then finally, through Grand Modules A, B and C (with each module taking 5-6 months to complete).

Q. How do I know what class to start my child in?

We assess the children on the day they come for the free trial class and can advise whether your child will start in Foundation Level 1, Junior Level 1 or Junior Level 2 depending on the age and learning ability of the child.

Q. What fees do you charge?

There is a non-refundable registration fee of $120. Students will need course materials at the beginning of each level (a set of three workbooks), which is $40. Every two weeks, you’ll be charged $112 for the four classes scheduled during that fortnight. This includes the 1 free makeup session per month.

Q. What is Abacus Junior?

This is a programme designed specifically for children ages 5 to 7 years old. Younger children have a different pace of learning. This programme meets their unique learning needs while providing foundational building blocks for learning ability.

Q. My child is good at Maths. How will he benefit from SIP Abacus?

Abacus is a tool used to perform basic arithmetic operations. Your child will acquire systematic learning skills from the SIP Abacus that will help him do sums faster, while improving in areas like concentration, visual memory, numerical ability, listening, self confidence and retention recall – skills that are essential for your child’s success.

Q. My child is not good at Maths. What improvement can we expect from SIP Abacus?

SIP Abacus is not a Math Tuition. SIP Abacus classes help to improve the overall concentration ability of a child. Your child will be able to do sums like 438+234+363 in less than 3 seconds without using a calculator or an abacus within about 2 years of joining us. This is due to their enhanced concentration skills. Abacus is a tool used to perform basic arithmetic operations. Your child will acquire systematic learning skills from the SIP Abacus that will help him do sums faster, while improving in areas like concentration, visual memory, numerical ability, listening, self confidence and retention recall – skills that are essential for your child’s success in all areas of life.

Q. Why is learning SIP Abacus important when children can use a calculator to do maths?

The SIP Abacus programme develops the child’s learning abilities, which in turn, helps her achieve in all areas of life. Sure, your child could learn to perform math calculations on a calculator, but that specific action won’t improve your child’s ability to concentrate, remember visually, improve numerical ability, or listen or recall. Our programme develops all of these skills, which will help your child in every activity she participates in.

Q. What types of children are best suited for the programme?

SIP Abacus will help three types of children:
Students who are currently struggling: They will catch up with their peers and be faster than average parents in addition and subtraction within about 10 months after joining our program.
Average students: They will improve significantly in their concentration which will be also reflected in improvement in Maths abilities about a year after joining us.
Above Average Students: Students who are already very smart can use SIP Abacus to improve their concentration significantly and be the fastest in mental arithmetic in their school. SIP Abacus students have also demonstrated improved scores in English Reading and Writing in less than a year after joining us due to improved concentration skills.

Q. Do you offer English/Science classes too?

SIP Abacus is a brain development program. It doesn’t specifically focus on English, Science or Math, but rather, we focus on the child’s learning ability, which your child can then transfer to and use in nearly any activity imaginable: learning a musical instrument, excelling in maths, English, science or any other topic in school, and much more!
